Do Blaming and Shaming really help people manage their weight?
Based on the premise that an unhealthy weight is the result of lack of will power and over-indulgence, this strategy has historically done more harm than good.
In modern times we have come to see obesity as a disease rather than a character flaw. Offering compassionate care and treatment like supportive psychotherapy, bariatric surgery and GLP-1”s have helped many who have previously felt powerless.
Returning to an attitude of public criticism and disdain such as that adopted by our current Secretary of Health, is demoralizing for those who are suffering.
